The most popular craps variants
We thought we should start listing the most common variants of craps and tell you a little about them.
But before you read on, we will take this opportunity to recommend our three other guides about craps:
- Craps - a basic guide about the game
- Craps rules - all about the rules of craps
- Craps Strategy - a guide on various strategies that can be used in the game
1. Crapless Craps
This variant of craps is sometimes also called "bastard craps" and is described as a simplified version of craps.
The disadvantage, however, is to House advantage (House Edge) is larger in this variant, with 5.38%.
2. High Point Craps
In this version it looks a little different when it comes to "Come Out Roll". If this thrown stops at 2 or 2, the cast is called "push" and ignored.
The game then restarts until another sum appears. If the dice are 11 or 12, it wins automatically.
The advantage of the house (Edge) in this variant is about 2.35%.
3. Simplified Craps
Simplified craps, or simplified craps in American, are, as the name implies, a more uncomplicated variant of the game.
There is only one bet and the player wins if it is thrown 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 and loses if it is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9.
The advantage of the house (Edge) is about 2.8% and the payouts are:
- 2 pays 3: 1
- 3 and 4 pay 1: 1
- 10 or 11 pays 2: 1
- 12 pays 5: 1
4. Die Rich Craps
This variant differs from many other variants because there is only one cube in Die Rich Craps, making the game easier for any beginner.
In Die Rich Craps, the player wins if it is thrown 6 on the come out, but loses if there is a number between 1-6, then the number will be Point.
When a point is established, the player gets three throws to try to hit the point number, this without throwing one one.
If the player fails, the game restarts and a new player will be "Shooter".
The odds of Die Rich Craps vary depending on when the player wins.
If the winnings come from the come out, the payout will be 1: 1, it will be when the player throws the point number on the second or fourth cast, the odds will be 2: 1 and double if the player throws points on the third throw.
5. New York Craps
This variant of craps has its name as it is popular in the city of New York.
What mainly sets this variant apart from ordinary craps is the advantage of the house (House Edge), but also the table layout is different.
In Die Rich Craps it is not possible to place any come or Come Inserts!
6. Diceless Craps
This is a slightly weird variant of craps where you play completely without cubes. A little special considering that craps are just a dice game!
The variant was created in the United States, where gambling with dice was banned in some states. As the variant became more popular, "Diceless Craps" has also found a home at some live casinos.
In diceless craps, as many as 44 decks are used, but only ace up to and including the sixes.
Apart from the big difference that cards are used instead of cubes, the other rules are quite similar.
7. Craps with both cubes and cards
There are also variants of craps where both cards and cubes are used. And just like in "Diceless Craps," ESS is used even.
The dice are thrown and the results of these show which cards to draw. Blue dice with a 3er turns a blue card number three and so on.
It is the result of the cards that count, and the idea is to eliminate all cheating with the dice.
Two common variants of this form of craps are "Pauma" and "Harrah's".
8. Open Craps, Fading Craps or Money Craps
This variant is called Open Craps, Fading Craps or Money Craps. In American, the game usually goes by the name "Money Craps".
This variant is played mainly in private contexts and even here only one dice is used.
The name comes from the fact that large sums are usually invested. The players are aiming for the "bank" (the person taking the bets) which in turn takes commission on all winnings.
It usually involves a commission of 5-7%.
9. Scarney Craps
This variant has got its name from game expert John Scarne who also developed this game.
In Scarney Craps, Come and Come Inserts do not exist, which makes the variant different from regular craps.
The reason Scarney Craps was developed was to increase the chances of winning the casinos that did not have as many players as the big ones in Las Vegas.
10. Low Limit Craps
This variant is aimed at all Craps games where it is possible to bet very low. Something that may be good if you are a beginner or have a smaller gaming budget.
11. High Limit Craps
Same as above, but the opposite! This variant is suitable for big players, players who want/can bet more.
12. Bubbles Craps Machines
Bubbles Craps Machines or Shoot to Win Craps as it is also called is a physical slot machine found at land -based casinos in, for example, Las Vegas.
This may be suitable for beginners who do not really dare to sit down at a proper crap table and/or who want to test the game in peace and quiet.
